How to improve your public speaking

Great public speaking isn’t about saying clever things.

It’s about forming a connection—real, human, and immediate. No matter your experience level, if you want to lead, influence, or inspire, you need to master the skill of engaging the people in front of you.

In this guide, you’ll find practical tools for breaking through the most persistent barriers to audience engagement—from fear and self-consciousness to dull delivery or disorganised ideas.

Whether you’re just starting out or refining your craft, these techniques will help you connect deeply, speak clearly, and hold attention like a pro.

The Public Speaker’s Dilemma: When Nobody’s Really Listening

Picture this.

You’re giving a presentation you’ve rehearsed dozens of times. You’ve memorised your transitions. You’ve timed your pauses. You even wore your best shirt. And yet… the audience is slipping away. Their eyes glaze over. Some fidget. A few check their watches.

You ask yourself: What am I doing wrong?

Here’s the truth: speaking at people is not the same as speaking to them. Audiences don’t respond to technical perfection—they respond to resonance. To engagement. To feeling included in what’s being said.

And that’s a skill you can learn.

First Principle of Public Speaking: Engagement is Emotional Before It’s Intellectual

People don’t engage because a speech is perfectly crafted. They engage because it makes them feel something—seen, curious, moved, involved.

Public Speaking: Start With Empathy

Every audience asks the same question, consciously or not:"Why should I care?"

A compelling speaker answers that early. They position themselves not as the star of the show, but as a guide with a message that matters to the audience.

A Simple Opening Formula:

  • Relatable situation (“You’ve probably sat through talks where…”)

  • Shared challenge or value (“We all want to be heard, not just tolerated.”)

  • Promise of relevance (“Let’s explore how to speak so people truly listen.”)

Barrier #1: The Nerves That Rob You of Presence

Even experienced speakers face nerves. The key isn’t eliminating fear—it’s learning how to move through it without losing your message.

Signs of Anxiety in Action:

  • Rapid, shallow speaking.

  • Overuse of filler words.

  • Avoiding eye contact.

  • Rigid posture or constant movement.

What Works:

  • Box Breathing (4 seconds in, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4). Calms the nervous system.

  • Power Posing (Amy Cuddy’s research supports this): Adopting a strong stance before you speak can improve confidence.

  • Grounding Techniques: Grip the lectern gently. Press your feet into the ground. Slow your gestures.

💡 Practical Drill: Before your next talk, practise a 60-second introduction while deliberately slowing your breathing and movements. Note how your voice and body language change.

Barrier #2: Monotone Delivery that Drains Attention

You might have the most valuable ideas in the room—but if your delivery lacks variation, they won’t land.

Fixing the Flatline:

  • Emphasise keywords by altering pitch and volume.

  • Pause for effect before or after key statements.

  • Speed up during excitement, slow down to reflect or let a point settle.

🗣 Practice Tip: Take a short paragraph from any book and read it aloud using emotional emphasis. Record yourself and listen back. Would you stay engaged?

Barrier #3: Poor Structure that Confuses Listeners

Disorganisation isn’t just frustrating for your audience—it kills engagement.

Strong Structure is Invisible but Felt

Your audience should never be wondering, “Where is this going?”

Here’s a speaker’s go-to framework:

  • Open with a hook: A short story, bold claim, or personal anecdote.

  • Introduce 3 key points: People retain triads best.

  • End with impact: A challenge, a question, or a call to action.

✍️ Quick Planning Exercise: Outline your next talk using this format. Just one sentence per section to start.

Barrier #4: Forgetting the Audience is Alive

Some speakers get so wrapped up in their message that they forget: there are real people listening. They crave interaction, not a monologue.

Ways to Involve the Room:

  • Ask questions, even rhetorical ones. (“Have you ever noticed how…?”)

  • Respond to body language. Acknowledge when people laugh, nod, or frown.

  • Invite participation. (“Turn to someone next to you and…”)

👥 Try This: In your next live or virtual talk, insert one interactive moment early—just one—and observe the difference in attention.

Barrier #5: Stiff or Distracting Body Language

Your body can either reinforce your message or contradict it.

The Goldilocks Principle:

Too little = stiffness, nervousness, disconnection.

  • Too much = distraction, chaos.

  • Just right = gestures that highlight, clarify, and connect.

Focus On:

  • Eyes: Make soft, direct contact with individuals.

  • Face: Let your expression reflect your message.

  • Hands: Gesture with intent. Avoid clasping or fidgeting.

  • Posture: Relaxed, grounded, open stance.

🎥 Video Tip: Record a one-minute video of yourself speaking on a topic you love. Watch with the sound off. What does your body say?

Engagement is a Skill—Not a Mystery

There’s nothing mystical about speaking with presence and power. It’s a learned art. It’s the result of consistent practice, structured feedback, and a willingness to keep growing.

And here’s the great part: you don’t need to become someone else. You just need to become a more connected version of yourself.
